IAM Local 2734 is proud to announce that the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has officially granted certification to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) as the bargaining agent for supervisors employed by Unifi Aviation Canada, Inc. at Calgary International Airport (YYC).
In its decision dated January 20, 2026, the CIRB confirmed that Unifi supervisors fall within the definition of “employee” under the Canada Labour Code and are therefore entitled to the right to union representation. The Board carefully reviewed the duties of the supervisor classifications and determined that, based on their current roles and responsibilities, they do not exercise sufficient independent managerial authority to exclude them from collective bargaining.
The Board also rejected the employer’s arguments that certification would create a conflict of interest, noting that a separate bargaining unit for supervisors actually helps insulate against potential conflicts while ensuring fair and independent representation.
This decision is an important step forward in strengthening workplace fairness, clarity of roles, and respect on the job. IAM Local 2734 looks forward to working with Unifi supervisors as they move toward first collective agreement negotiations and ensuring their voices are fully represented.
Further updates will be shared as bargaining preparations move ahead.
In solidarity.
